I flip my cell phone shut, pull back into traffic, and nearly get creamed by a delivery truck making a last-minute turn into a service road.
God fucking dammit, Marcus. I’m out here busting my balls in a 100° car with no A/C, on my way to track down a guy with no name who might be dying as we speak, and you’re chilling at home getting stoned. Nice. I hope whoever Mandy is has more luck putting up with your bullshit than I do.

I’m at my laptop in the library confirming my flight back to Chicago when I hear a thud coming from what sounds like the kitchen. Daryl and I both look up. There’s another thud, and the unmistakable clink of dinnerware.
Within seconds we’re on our feet and running into the kitchen and there’s Balero, in all his glory.

And so—Really? We’re actually doing this?—we pile in Roland’s limo, all six of us, and head for the goddamn zoo. The stifling, suffocating awkwardness of Zeke’s apartment is now occupying an even smaller space and is on wheels. Courtney makes some comment about this is not how she imagined her next limo ride would go, and Zeke won’t stop sighing. Otherwise it’s quiet. Painfully, horribly quiet.

My apartment is a nightmare. Somewhere in this pile of shit is that woman’s number. Not that I can remember her name. I suppose it would be helpful if I knew what the hell I was looking for. It was the woman with the book club. I wrote down her name and number and left it here, in the kitchen for Balero, once upon a time. On this pile of paper chaos on the counter. And—no pressure—but Roland will be here any minute.

I park on the street and move slowly up our front walk towards the door. Some guy is gesturing frantically from the car. He holds up a finger. Be right there.
