While I confess I never listened to their full length CD The First Day, I nonetheless adore this small collection of remixes from Sylvian and Fripp’s 1993 collaborative period.

I’m not entirely sure I knew who Future Sound of London was when I first bought this EP. I only knew I was still reeling from Sylvian’s early solo works of the 80’s. I also remembered that Robert Fripp was credited with some synthesizer manipulations on Sylvian’s devastating Gone To Earth Double LP, so really, snapping up this single was a no-brainer at the time.

There’s a fascinating traffic jam of talent represented here. Future Sound of London dominated early ’90s rave culture. Sylvian hails from the glam-emo outfit Japan, and Fripp is of course well known for his work with King Crimson, Blondie, The Talking Heads, David Bowie, Brian Eno, and countless others.

The Grid, a name with which I confess to be unfamiliar, is a collaboration between Dave Ball and Richard Norris. Their names had a familiar ring, but I’m afraid I had to look them both up. Ball has famously worked with Soft Cell, and Norris has done remixes for Chemical Brothers, Tracy Thorne, Badly Drawn Boy, Goldfrapp, and others.

More importantly to me, Both Ball and Norris were both partially responsible for Psychic TV’s late 80’s acid madness, which is a subject for a whole other post here.
